I have been interested in aircraft since I first flew in 1971, and since 1979 have
regularly visited UK airports, and occasionally European airports watching aeroplanes
and collecting aircraft registrations. My latest foray in this area was on Monday 13 October 1997
when I went to Amsterdam for the day with a couple of friends.
Until the kids were born, I also used to co-drive (ie navigate, not drive) a rally car with my friend
who is also my children's godfather.
In Formula 1, my hero was (and still is) Nigel Mansell - the best British driver since..... well since nobody really.
OK, so Jackie Stewart may have won 3 world titles, but for an out and out racer, you couldn't beat Mansell.
The move he pulled at Spain in 1991 where he was wheel to wheel (less than a fag paper between them) with
the late great Ayrton Senna ranks as one of the all-time overtaking moves.
